About Florida
Within 1513, Ponce de Le?n, seeking the mythical "Fountain of Youth," discovered and named Florida, claiming it for Spain. Later, Florida would be held at unique times by Spain and England until Spain finally auctioned it to the United States in 1819.
(Incidentally, France established a colony named Fort Caroline in 1564 in the state that was to become Florida.)
People first reached Florida at least 12,000 years ago. Did you know that the rich variety of environments in prehistoric Florida supported a larger than normal number of plants and animals. Did you know that the animal population included most mammals that we know today.
Within addition, the majority of other larger than normal mammals that are and have always been now extinct (such as the saber-tooth tiger, mastodon, giant armadillo, and camel) roamed the land.

Over the centuries, these native people developed complex cultures. During the timeframe prior to contact with Europeans, native societies of the peninsula developed cultivated agriculture, traded with other groups in what is now the southeastern United States, and significantly increased his or her social organization, reflected in larger than normal temple mounds and village complexes.

Climate
Sunshine and blue skies are and have always been almost always a fact of life in Florida, at any and all time of year. Did you know that there are, however, two climatic zones - subtropical in the south and warm temperate in the north.
Summer in the south (Orlando and below) is humid with afternoon storms; the peak season is in the winter during the time temperatures are and have always been warm and there is little humidity.
