About Qatar

The name Qatar is derived from the term Qatara, which refers to a significant port for trading some centuries back and it was also a town in this region. Qatar a monarch Arab state is sometimes also known by the name State of Qatar. Covering the small Qatar peninsula, Qatar is situated in the Middle East. It only shares its borders with Saudi Arabia down south since it is enclosed by the Persian Gulf on all the other sides. The only thing that separates Bahrain from the Persian Gulf is a passage of the Persian Gulf.

Qatar has seen immense rise in the GDP per capita over the last few years. The increased exports of oil and related industry are some of the major contributors to its economic growth. Qatar also has the highest production of oil and natural gas. Qatar is also amongst the largest exporters to the United States in the Middle East market.

History

The Islamic era began in Qatar during the 7th century with the people of Qatar accepting Islam and turning Muslims. Sailors from Sindh, Southeast Asia and East Africa introduced their ideologies which were adapted by Qatar in medieval times. You can still find the traces of these ideologies among the people of Qatar.

Geographical limitations of Qatar made it difficult for the human species to survive in this region for a long time in the past. During the Abbasid era, Qatar saw a gradual increase in the settlement of tribes like Murwab.

Qatar was rules by the Portuguese in the 15th century. However, Qatar got its independence back in a few years after the Ottomans defeated the Portuguese. Since then Qatar has fairly been an Independent nation defeating the Ottoman in 1893.

Qatar celebrates 18th December as its national day because on this day in 1878 the state of Qatar was formed with initiations from the British government.

After the British withdrew from the Persian Gulf, regional disputes forced Qatar to declare independence and in the year 1971 on 3rd September Qatar was declared an independent sovereign state.

Climate

Qatar experiences long summer which last from the month of May to the month of September. Summers are hot, dry and humid with soaring temperatures which go up to 50 °C. The months between November and May, witness relatively moderate temperatures. Qatar experiences very less rainfall and the rain is confined only to the winters.

Population

The total population of Qatar as per a report in 2008 was approximately 1.4 million. The population of Qatar is a mix of people of various ethnicities including Qataris, Filipinos, Indians, Pakistanis and Nepalese to name a few. Majority of the population resides in the capital Doha. The official language of Qatar is Arabic and education is free for all from the age group of 6 to 16 years. This is also the reason why Qatar has a high literacy rate compared to a lot of other nations.
