Kuwait is a small country in the Middle East which has a very affluent economy especially with regards to its crude oil reserves. In fact, Kuwait holds around 10% of all of the oil reserves worldwide and makes around 50 % of its fortune by the selling this oil. Kuwait exports a great deal of oil and the government makes a good income through this. Kuwait's weather is no good with regards to farming as the climate is too arid. The main local food source in Kuwait is gained through fishing and also importing food from other countries and sources. Even the drinking water in the country has to be distilled or purchased from other countries. Kuwait is known as the eleventh richest country in the world and is a major ally of the United States. Kuwait boasts the highest literacy rate in the Arab world.
Historically, within this region was a major trade port. The Bani Utbah tribe being the primary enduring Arab settlers, they created the beginnings of the modern day country. In the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire entered Kuwait and flourished.
Kuwait became an independent sheikdom affiliated with the British after WW1 and in the 1930’s the country’s plentiful oil fields were found and independence from the UK was achieved in 1961 bringing with it great economic rewards and growth with regards to the state’s oil industry.
In 1990, Kuwait was invaded by its neighbor Iraq and was occupied until the US led forces intervened around seven months later. Kuwait's infrastructure was extremely badly damaged throughout the war and it had to be painstakingly rebuilt.
The spring season which begins around the month of March is generally rather warm and pleasant with scattered thunderstorms at times. There are cold winds in both the winter and the spring and hot breezes in the summer months. Warm and damp winds are evident from July to October. There is a north westerly wind which springs up around June and July, this is called the shamal and it causes very dramatic sandstorms.
Kuwait's official religion is Islam with around 15% of the population being Christian or Hindu. Arabic is the official language of Kuwait with English being widely spoken and used amongst many Kuwaitis. Interestingly most of the population of the country are not actually indigenous to Kuwait and are mostly foreigners there for work purposes and the like.
