About Jordan

The official name of Jordan which is in the Middle East is The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Jordanians generally speak Arabic as their first language, use the Jordanian dinar as their unit of currency and the population of the country is around 5.7 million. The capital of Jordan is Amman and the country is a democracy It also has a monarchy. King Abdullah II has been the King of Jordan since February 1999 and is the head of state there. Most Jordanians are Muslim and there is a small Christian contingent. Jordan has little petroleum and natural gas in comparison with its neighbours and as such its economy comes from mining. Jordan has a small Red Sea coast with a longer Dead Sea and has borders with Saudi Arabia, Israel, Syria and Iraq.

History

Jordan is filled with history and has been home to some of the world’s earliest settlements, relics of which can still be seen today. Jordan has belonged in turn to the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians, and in approximately 330 B.C., it passed to the Seleucids. In the 16th century, Jordan was taken over by Ottoman Turkish rule. Then the British came in WW1 and took Jordan from the Turkish. Jordan (formerly known as Transjordan) was made independent from the UK in 1923. The history of Jordan is very difficult to write concisely as it is so vast. The country’s geographical situation has given it an important role with regards to trade as it connects east with west and north with south.

Climate

Most of Jordan is desert and the country is very dry and quite Medirerranean style in climate. The climate in Jordan is rather arid in the summer with an average temperature of around 30 °C . In comparison it is fairly cold in the winter averaging at around 13 °C . The climate in Jordan is humid from November through to March and is fairly dry for the rest of the year.

Population

Islam is the predominant religion in the country with around 92% of the population being Muslims. The laws of Jordan promote religious freedom. All ethnic and religious groups within The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan enjoy the freedom to create and participate in their own clubs, schools etc. Different ethnic groups are free to learn and to teach their own languages. Whilst the official language in Jordan is Arabic, English is also widely spoken.
