It is noted that the southernmost of the Central American nations, Panama is south of Costa Rica and north of Colombia. Prior to the Spanish conquest, three indigenous communities resided in Panama – Cueva, Chocoan and Chibchan. The conquest of Panama was due to the search of Spanish people towards west for fetching gold reserves. Panama was part of Spanish empire for three centuries. The sea-route to Panama, which contained ships loaded with gold back to Spain were under attacks from English and Dutch pirates. The post colonial period for Panama saw Panama to be part of Colombia. However uproar towards independence and support from United States led Panama towards new ways of leading an independent country life. Post-independence period of Panama saw major conflicts between military rule and democratic governments.
Panama has a tropical climate. Seasons are encountered, mostly with high temperature and humidity levels. Temperature on the Pacific side of the country is encountered to be always typically lower than the Caribbean side. The tropical climate of Panama supports the growth of numerous plants. Climatic conditions are less susceptible to temperatures than to the rainfall levels. Rainfall is known to occur from April to December. The country is outside the belt of regions of the world that are affected by Hurricanes.
2010 population of Panama reveled 3.4 million. Population comprised of 70% mestizos, 14% West Indian, 10% white and the rest being Amerindian. The languages spoken in Panama by the people have a great degree of Spanish and Caribbean influence. Spanish is however the official and also the dominant language with more than 93% of people using the medium of Spanish to communicate as their first language. It is also the smallest country in terms of population of Spanish people citizens of Latin America. There is also Chinese immigration into Panama due to work opportunities to build the railroad in Panama.
