About Honduras

Honduras, in the north-central part of Central America, has to this day a Caribbean in addition to a Pacific coastline. Guatemala is to the west, El Salvador to the south, and Nicaragua to the east.

It is noted that the second-most impressive and largest country in Central America, Honduras is slightly larger than Tennessee. Generally mountainous, the country is marked by fertile plateaus, river valleys, and narrow coastal plains.

Honduras is known to be a modest country in Central America. It borders El Salvador and Guatemala in the north and Nicaragua in the south.

History

The Pre-Colonial history of Honduras sees it as being flourished with Maya civilization that lasted for hundreds of years. In 1502, Christopher Columbus came to Honduras as first European. In 1524, Spaniard forces descended from Mexico. Conquest followed thereon which took 2 long decades. Honduras eventually became Spain’s possession in empire. Colonial period saw Honduras as Kingdom of Guatemala. Spanish interest in Honduras was due to silver mining. Trujillo was the Spanish capital of Honduras then. Honduras acquired independence from Spain in 1821. From 1840-1850s Honduras failed in their attempts to cause restoration of Central American unity. Honduras joined allied nations during World War 2. 2009 year saw constitutional crisis for Honduras.

Climate

The climate present on all the three regions in Honduras differs to a great extent. The lowlands in Caribbean have tropical climate which is usually wet. Here rain occurs throughout the year. The Pacific lowlands have typically wet and dry climate. The climate in the interior highlands is typically dry. Honduras falls in those regions of the world that are affected by Hurricane. The Caribbean side of Honduras is very much prone to Hurricanes. Pacific side is usually quite less severe.

Population

National Census data of Honduras states that the population in Honduras is about 7.5 million. The majority of population encountered is mestizo or mixed descent of American and European origin (90%). Seven percent population is indigenous and rest of population is of mixed race, including blacks. There are a lot of Christian Arabs who have been descended from the Palestine. Emigration from Honduras is great in numbers since 1975 due to its people seeking political refuge and work opportunities elsewhere.
