History

Historically, the beginning of the Czech Republic can be dated to the ninth century, when the state of Bohemia was formed by Wenceslaus II. The kingdom of Bohemia was the only independent kingdom to be incorporated into the Holy Roman Empire. The nation now known as the Czech Republic remains part of the whole Roman Empire until 1804. Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, Bohemia was annexed by the Austro-Hungarian empire. Czechs fought alongside the Austro-Hungarians in the First World War, and following the defeat of the central powers, the nation of Czechoslovakia was created. This nation was taken in 1938 by the German Vermacht, under the leadership of that of Hitler. However, sections of it were also taken by the Soviet Union during the same period. Following, the invasion of the Soviet Union by German forces in 1941, the Red Army began an unstoppable offensive, which resulted in the Soviet conquest of most of Eastern Europe including Czechoslovakia. For this reason, the Czechs and the Slovaks lived under Soviet domination until 1993, when the country is split along ethnic lines. The Czech Republic is by far one of the most modern countries in the Eastern European region, being described is highly democratic, healthy, and economically prosperous.

Climate

The climate of the Czech Republic, like many of the other Eastern European countries’ weather patterns, can be described as extreme winters and warm summers. However, this is only general statement, because the climate and rainfall recorded in the Czech Republic varies from place to place based on extreme and abrupt changes in elevation. Despite the fact that the Czech Republic has languished under dictators for the majority of the twentieth century, this nation has one of the strongest economic bases in Eastern Europe. As such, the Czech Republic has become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the United Nations, and the European Union. The government of the Czech Republic has been described as a liberal democracy, and is led by a prime minister, and represented by a bicameral legislature.
