In the 2011 census, it was estimated that Vietnam has a total population of about 90.5 million inhabitants of which the greatest 85% part is made up of the Viet or Kinh ethnic group. This ethnic majority wields a greater influence over the country. The country is the 13th most populated country on this earth while it is the eighth highest populated country in Asia. Though the official language of Vietnam is Vietnamese, a majority of the country’s population speaks a tonal monosyllabic Mon–Khmer language. The major religions of Vietnam include Mahayana Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. More than 85% of the Vietnamese are Buddhists, which has strongly influenced the culture of the country.
