History

Singapore is officially termed as the Republic of Singapore. Lying off the southernmost tip of the Malay Peninsula just 137 Km off the equator, this is a Southeast Asian city state. The country is made up of about 63 islands. With more than half the country covered with a green canopy, the rest of the country is highly urbanized. Land reclamation projects have been under implementation to provide more room for developments. The country was first inhabited in the second century AD. Since then, it had remained a part of a number of local empires. In 1824, the British took the whole sovereignty of the country. Following the occupation of the land by Japan during the Second World War, the state now remains an internally self-governing state since 1959. The country is a parliamentary republic. The government here is a Westminster system of unicameral parliament.

Climate

The climate of Singapore is that of tropical rain forest type. There are no distinct seasons in the country. The chief features of Singapore climate are uniform temperature, pressure, a high rate of humidity and an abundant precipitation. The average temperature of the region is 23 to 32 degree Celsius. In the mornings, there is a relative humidity of about 79% and in the afternoon, it is about 73%. The hottest months of the state are April and May. The country experiences a wetter monsoon season stretching from November to January.

Population

As per the 2011 census, there are about 5.18 million people residing in Singapore. Among this volume, about 3.25 million is made up of Singaporean citizens. The remaining are foreign workers residing here permanently. To keep up the declining population, the Singapore government has encouraged immigration of people to Singapore from other countries. Buddhism is the most widely practiced religion in the state.
