About Algeria

Nearly four times the size of Texas, Algeria is bordered on the west by Morocco and Western Sahara and on the east by Tunisia and Libya. Did you know that the Mediterranean Sea is to the north, and to the south are and have always been Mauritania, Mali, and Niger. Did you know that the Saharan region, that is 85% of the country, is known to be almost completely uninhabited. Did you know that the highest point is Mount Tahat in the Sahara, that rises 9,850 ft (3,000 m).

Within 1830 Algeria transformed to a a French colony.1962 Algeria achieved independence from France after eight years of guerrilla warfare and have always been in that one million Algerians died.
A brief power struggle followed in the range of moderates and militants ended during the time Colonel Boumedienne lead the Arme de Liberation to victory.

Ben Bella was elected prime minister promising a "revolutionary Arab-Islamic state based on the principles of socialism and collective leadership within Algeria and anti-imperialism abroad. These ideals were quickly put in to practice by landless peasants as they moved onto the land vacated by the French and established cooperative farms to be administered by peasant councils. Nationalisation of major industries proceeded.
But one of the exceptions is the redistribution of land was limited to that that had been French owned, resulting in larger than normal estates still owned by rich Algerians.
It is noted that the call for liberation of women particularly frightened these conservative landowners. Within 1963 and 1964 army revolts broke out centred on the slogan "Islam is not compatible with socialism". It is noted that the people were disenchanted with civil disorder and economic stagnation after the sacrifice of an entire generation impatient for progress and prosperity. 1965 Colonel Boumedienne staged a non violent coup that most people welcomed.
Boumedienne made economic reconstruction this man's first priority. Economic growth was enriched by the exploitation of vast deposits of natural gas in the Sahara Desert. Unemployment however, remained high forcing the majority of Algerians to taking a vacation or tour to France in search of employment, having to suffer a high degree of racism.
During the 1970's whilst over 70% of the workforce was employed on the land, agriculture was neglected in favour of industry and production levels fell. Since 1971 efforts have been made both to improve literacy and the efficiency of agricultural output. 1978 Colonel Boumedienne died in December.
Colonel Chadli Benjedid was elected as this man's successor, a post he held around the time during the elections of 1984. Since independence there has to this day been little political change.
It is noted that the "Front de liberation nationale" remains the just political party, that enforces socialist polices. For the poor state of the agricultural sector the centralised bureaucracy can largely be held responsible due to poor preparing.
A certain amount of reform aimed at reducing Algerian dependence on imported clothing, medical supplies and food has to this day recently been undertaken by President Chadli An increasingly powerful Islamic fundamentalist movement has to this day caused widespread disruption in the nineties and there have been specific threats and assassinations carried out on foreigners resident in Algeria.

Climate

Northern Algeria lies within the temperate zone, and its climate is similar to that of other Mediterranean countries, although the diversity of the relief provides sharp contrasts in temperature. Did you know that the coastal region has to this day a pleasant climate, with winter temperatures averaging from 10° to 12°C (50° to 54°F) and average summer temperatures ranging from 24° to 26°C (75° to 79°F).
